BY THE TIME YOU'RE OLD, ALZHEIMER'S COULD BE JUST A MEMORY

So many advances have been made in recent years, we have every reason to be hopeful for an Alzheimer's cure, expecially if we work together now. Let's make brain health a personal and a national priority. That's what Maintain Your Brain is all about.

Start by eating right and keeping yourself mentally and physically active. Advocate for more government funding of alzheimer's research. And give generously of your time and money to the Alzheimer's Association. Help us continue leading the way toward new discoveries, treatments and care.

Take steps now to take care of your brain

Mounting evidence suggest that we can manage certain risk factors and maintain optimal brain functions. Just as we can take steps to maintain a healthy heart, we can manage certain risk factors to maintain a healthy brain.

  • Manage your numbers - blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body weight - to stay healthy as you age.
  • Feed your brain. Take a multivitamin that includes folic acid, vitamins E and C, and eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Exercise your body and brain. Work out, take a class, converse, read, play cards or work on crossword puzzles.

Know that a world without Alzheimer's disease can be a reality.

  • Alzheimer's disease is a complex, progressive disease that destroys cells in the brain. Common symptons include gradual memory loss as well as decline in thinking skills and the ability to perform routine tasks. People with Alzheimer's also experience changes in their personalities and behavior.
  • About 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. Between 11 and 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer's by 2050 unless a cure is found. However, there is progress, hope and great momentum in ending Alzheimer's.
  • 95 percent of what we know about Alzheimer's we've learned in the past 15 years. Scientists are making great strides in better treatments, preventions and a cure.
  • The joint efforts of government agencies, research centers and pharmaceutical companies have uncovered many of the secrets of Alzheimer's disease.
  • Today, Alzheimer's disease can be diagnosed with 90 percent accuracy.

Volunteer, advocate and donate.

  • Join an Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk or spend a few hours volunteering at our Chapter office.
  • Lobby your legislators to increase federal funding for Alzheimer's to $1 billion each year. Talk to them about supporting local Alzheimer initiatives. Click here for more information about ways you can get involved.
  • Give to the Alzheimer's Association West Virginia Chapter to enhance support - and make Alzheimer's a part of our past, not our future.

The health of our brain will determine the quality of our life as we age. While we don't know what causes Alzheimer's disease, there is no proven prevention, and there isn't anything we can do about certain risk factors such as aging and genetics, there is progress and hope.

We need more research. More funding. New treatments. Better drugs. Increased compassion and understanding. Stronger leadership. Improved care.

Place the prevention and cure of Alzheimer's disease at the top of your agenda.

It's up to you. You can Maintain Your Brain.
